By John Gibson. Venue 63 | Nic 5 (Nicolson Square Venues Courtyard) at Hoots @ Nicolson Square
As a lifelong football fan I attended this show with the hope that Stott might do some jokes about the hypocrisy and childishness of the sport. Instead, he explains that the title refers to the sort of mercurial player who would be remembered as a local genius rather than a club servant. Stott describes himself as such a performer then delivers a pretty lukewarm gag that lacked craft and the requisite timing.
This is one of many curious aspects of his set (which is performed in a venue that he immediately suggests is sub-par). By neither focusing on his (admittedly traumatic and profound experiences with Poland Syndrome) nor dissecting the inequality within the beautiful game, we get an uneven set comprising some crowd work then some male-feminist critique of the inability of men to discuss their emotions. The venue is only one of the problems with this uneven set but Stott is a pleasant performer.
