Grid Iron’s staging of Andrew O’Hagan’s Mayflies really utilises the old George Brown & Sons Engineering Works on the Shore: the actors flit from the various entry-points into the belly of the old building as they tell the tale of two friends bonded by music, politics and that immutable quality that people sometimes find in each other.
Ben Morrison has created a hacienda-like vibe in the appropriately industrial space, and his use of bespoke projected clips on both walls really help anchor the story which spreads across three decades. The technical aspects and the actors’ energy are commendable, making this delightful (albeit predictable) tale truly come alive. It also made this Scottish reviewer ashamed that this is his first Grid Iron production.
